Underreported

I read this and was completely shocked I hadn’t heard anything about it yet. See this Metafilter post:

The Guajurati State Government has been directly implicated in a massacre of over 2,000 moslems during riots in 2002. There has been surprisingly little coverage by world news media. via pickledpolitics a British based SE Asian current affairs / political blog.

Enable Wi-fi on any digital camera

Well, for now only any camera that uses SD Memory:

Eye-fi is a magical orange SD memory card that will not only store 2GB worth of pictures, it’ll upload them to your computer, and to Flickr, Facebook, Picasa (or 14 others) wirelessly, invisibly, automatically!

This little guy looks like a normal 2GB memory card and works with any camera that takes SD memory. There are no antennas, no protrusions, no subscription fees, and no cables.

For $99, this is pretty cool – especially the auto-upload to Flickr feature. It’s not really practical for me, since I usually send things through Lightroom before uploading, but it might be really useful for some.

Ways to avoid cancer risk

Want to avoid cancer? Don’t have too much fun:

The World Cancer Research Fund carried out the largest ever inquiry into lifestyle and cancer, and issued several stark recommendations.

They include not gaining weight as an adult, avoiding sugary drinks and alcohol, and not eating bacon or ham.

Ha, just kidding, go ahead and have fun:

Commenting ahead of the report’s release, cancer specialist Professor Karol Sikora said: “There’s absolutely nothing magic about 10 bullet points to prevent cancer.

“The main message I would have is not to worry about it, to enjoy life, if you like a glass of wine have it, and a small amount of meat is not going to harm you.”

The Great Iraq Swindle

“How Bush Allowed an Army of For-Profit Contractors to Invade the U.S. Treasury” – this is a great article from Rolling Stone a few months ago:

How is it done? How do you screw the taxpayer for millions, get away with it and then ride off into the sunset with one middle finger extended, the other wrapped around a chilled martini? Ask Earnest O. Robbins — he knows all about being a successful contractor in Iraq.

Blogotheque’s Take Away Shows

These are some of the coolest music videos ever. Blogoteque takes indie bands to Paris streets and video tapes them. Awesomeness ensues.

My thoughts on Hillary

Ashton was just asking me what I thought of Hillary. I thought I’d enumerate here and ask for others’ opinions.

  • Good: Her health care reform plan in the 90s was encouraging. I would like to see more of this from her (or any candidate).
  • Bad: She backed off of that plan and took campaign contributions in large sums from many in the health care establishment her reform would have hurt.
  • Meh: She now has some sort of forced insurance plan (like how you have to have car insurance) that sounds like a muddy hybrid involving tax breaks for those who can’t afford it.
  • Bad/Meh: She’s a bit hawkish for my tastes, but I suppose that can’t be avoided in a viable candidate in this country.
  • Good: She does have a fair amount of political experience, and even some White House experience to a degree, so that’s probably a plus.
  • Bad: I’m no fan of dynastic presidencies. Bush Sr. + Clinton (x2) + Bush Jr. (x2) + Clinton = at least 24 years of the same 2 families leading the country. Doesn’t that seem a little messed up to anyone else?
  • She’s very smart, but smart people can use their powers for good or evil, so this one’s a neutral.

Of course, this is all assuming she’ll be the Democratic nominee and has the wherewithal to win the presidency.

An expert on waterboarding sets the record straight

Waterboarding is Torture… Period (SWJ Blog)

As a former Master Instructor and Chief of Training at the US Navy Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape School (SERE) in San Diego, California I know the waterboard personally and intimately. SERE staff were required undergo the waterboard at its fullest. I was no exception. I have personally led, witnessed and supervised waterboarding of hundreds of people. It has been reported that both the Army and Navy SERE school’s interrogation manuals were used to form the interrogation techniques used by the US army and the CIA for its terror suspects. What was not mentioned in most articles was that SERE was designed to show how an evil totalitarian, enemy would use torture at the slightest whim.
[...]
With regards to the waterboard, I want to set the record straight so the apologists can finally embrace the fact that they condone and encourage torture.

He elaborates on the subject, and makes the general point that America is losing its sense of honor. I’d take his word over Joe Scarborough’s.

Lovely little mixtape

Check out the new mixtape over at Flux-Rad flux-rad's flickr.
It’s “designed for chilly fall morning walks to work with coffee in hand and scarf around your neck, and evenings on your porch watching brown leaves fall,” and I’m enjoying it. There are more mixtapes linked in the far-right sidebar on that page, too.

High Afghan civilian casualties are systemic

This CBS report is important:

After six years, the liberation of Afghanistan has become a triumph without victory. The fighting is the greatest it has been since the beginning of the war and more civilians are dying. In fact, 60 Minutes was surprised to hear this: while the enemy has killed hundreds of civilians this year, a similar number of civilians have been killed by American forces. With relatively few troops there, the U.S. and NATO rely on air power. The number of civilians killed in air strikes has doubled.

Firedoglake has more.
