Mike Libby – Insect Lab

Beetle

These are really cool:

Insect Lab is an artist studio that customizes real insects with antique watch parts and electronic components. Offering specimens that come in many shapes, sizes and colors; each insect is individually adorned, each is one of a kind and unique.

Borrowing from both science fiction and science fact, Insect Lab’s customized insects are a celebration of natural and manmade function. Specimens are presented in custom black shadow boxes or glass dome display, allowing for presentation anywhere.

Persepolis

This new animated film (which apparently is based on a graphic novel) looks really great:

Demonstrations over jailed UK teacher

You may have heard about the teacher from the UK jailed in Sudan for allowing her children to name a teddy bear Mohammad. 15 days in a Sudanese jail is already a disproportionately harsh response to something like this. Apparently not, according to protesters:

Some news agencies reported thousands of people took part in the protest, but a BBC reporter at the scene said up to a thousand marchers turned out.

According to some agencies, some of the protesters chanted: “Shame, shame on the UK”, “No tolerance – execution” and “Kill her, kill her by firing squad”.

One demonstrator told reporters that it was unacceptable to take a toy and call it Muhammad.

First of all, reports of the protest are probably exaggerated for dramatic effect. I mean, you can probably pick a few people out of a war protest in Austin and get some truly ludicrous statements out of them. But they did have a protest, and the point I’d like to make is this: don’t they have more important things to worry about in Sudan?

Hitchhiking Across America

Alaska

Holy crap. I want to do this. The photos this guy took while hitchhiking across America are gorgeous, interesting and so cool. And the story of the trip itself makes me more than a little jealous. I may just up and start hitchhiking one of these days.

New group Gmail chat feature + new :)s

A couple of nice new features:

The new Gmail Seattle team is happy to announce two additions to Gmail’s built-in chat capabilities: group chat and enhanced emoticons.

To start a group chat, click “Group chat” from the “Options” menu when chatting. Enter the names of the people you want to add, and, bingo, you’re in your very own chat room. All the familiar features such as chat archiving and taking the chat off the record still work as well.

Gmail chat (including gtalk) is pretty much the only chat I use. I’m glad to hear they’re still adding features over there at Google.

Two new t-shirt designs I like

Bender’s Big Score

No, not Blendor’s Big Score. I’m talking about the new Futurama movie, which sounds pretty funny:

Torgo’s Executive Powder is an elaborate running gag throughout the film in retaliation against the Fox Network for its mishandling and eventual cancelling of Futurama.[9] The product consists of ground-up executives, including those of the film’s thinly veiled Fox Network parody (the Box Network), and makes repeated appearances due to its miraculous utility in such diverse tasks as (a million and one uses): anti-itch powder; seasoning; surgery; feeding heads in a jar; cosmetics; bomb disposal; artillery; and, in suppository form, the care of head transplant patients.

Voice acting by Al Gore, Mark Hamill, Sarah Silverman and Coolio, among others. [Thanks for the tip, EO.]

UT-designed off-shore Star Wars base

LANDO

I’m pretty sure part of the architectural discussion involved serious considerations, like “Dude – wouldn’t it be so cool?”:

Star Wars inspiration and biomimicry combine for the design of the Facility at Sea, a sustainable marine research platform and feat of offshore building engineering. The concept came together in an architecture studio at the University of Texas, which evaluated potential applications of the soaring structural designs of Star Wars for a marine research facility.

I think they should call it LANDO – though I can’t really think of a good set of words for that acronym. ‘Aquatic,’ ‘Nautical’ and ‘Oceanic’ come to mind.

Romney: Muslims need not apply

Well, at least he’s honest:

I asked Mr. Romney whether he would consider including qualified Americans of the Islamic faith in his cabinet as advisers on national security matters, given his position that “jihadism” is the principal foreign policy threat facing America today. He answered, “…based on the numbers of American Muslims [as a percentage] in our population, I cannot see that a cabinet position would be justified. But of course, I would imagine that Muslims could serve at lower levels of my administration.”

Joseph Smith Communion

On an unrelated note – isn’t Joseph Smith kinda creepy-looking?

Grappa – Rainbow

This is pure internet fun.
